Greg in a housedress talking about Suriashi
Suriashi series, 2018, 56cm x 76cm, ink on paper
I refer to these sessions as “play”. They become a metaphorical seesaw exploring the idea of giving and taking away control. I often draw big, strong men without any genitalia or add feminine curves to the shape. I dress them in female clothing and draw them as A-sexual. These interactions are not meant to emasculate, but instead explore the allocation of power within gender dynamics. Do men determine social control? Engaging in this form of “play” has become a way of questioning the power dynamics which have shaped our society and our behaviour within it.
The term "Suriashi" refers to a foot movement in traditional Japanese martial arts. Its purpose is to move while maintaining one's balance.
